    Munanga Shamba named MVP after guiding DR Congo to FIBA AfroCan crown

    BAMAKO (Mali) - Maxi Munanga Shamba  was named the Most Valuable Player of the FIBA AfroCan 2019 after guiding the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday in Bamako, Mali.

    BAMAKO (Mali) - Maxi Munanga Shamba  was named the Most Valuable Player of the FIBA AfroCan 2019 after guiding the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday in Bamako, Mali.   

    Shamba, who averaged 18 points and a tournament-high six assists ahead of the final, came up with 20 points and 7 rebounds in the Congolese's 82-61 victory over Kenya.

    The 25-year-old point guard was terrific  throughout the tournament pacing his country to five wins in as many games as they claimed their first-ever African title.

    He ended the competition with averages of 18.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists in five games. 

    Shamba highlighted the All-Tournament team, which included Kenya's Tyler Ongwae, Jordan Sakho (RD Congo), Edson Ndoniema (Angola) and Tom Wamukota of Kenya.

    Shamba gained international attention in the last few years, especially due to his performances in the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 as well as the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African  Qualifiers. 

    He went on to sign for Morocco side Association Sportive Sale, who clinched the FIBA Africa Champions Cup 2017 title against hosts Etoile Sportive de Rades.
