The stage is set for action as the FIBA Africa U16 Qualifiers tips off in Accra, Ghana with Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria to challenge for a ticket to be in Monastir for the Final Round from 13-23 July.
ACCRA (Ghana) – The stage is set for action as the FIBA Africa U16 Zone 3 Qualifiers tips off in Accra, Ghana on Thursday with Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria to challenge for a ticket to be in Tunisia for the Final Round from 13-23 July.
The countries will do battle over at the Eden Heights facility to determine who gets the ticket.
The junior Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire are not entirely new to this quest having played in three Final Rounds in 2013, 2019 and in 2021.
On the three occasions they finished 8th, 9th and had their best performance in 2021 placing in 5th place.
With an opportunity in Accra to make a fourth appearance, Cote d'Ivoire look set to take their chances and make it count.
Two bronze medal places in 2009 and 2019 looks a big boost for Nigeria in their quest to make a fourth showing on the big stage.
Nigeria's poorest placing is a 5th position back in 2015 but the dire to go beyond their bronze medal position twice is a challenge they are ready to surmount.
How they achieve this is dependent on how they perform against Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire.
Host Ghana, on paper, seems an outsider. Going by records available, Ghana have not made any showing at this level.
However, this does not foreclose the fact that they could spring surprises against Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria respectively.
