FIBA Asia Board holds second meeting of 2023-2027 cycle

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The FIBA Asia Board convened its second meeting of the 2023-2027 cycle via videoconference on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. 

The meeting was chaired by FIBA Asia President, Dr. K Govindaraj, while in attendance were also FIBA President Sheikh Saudi Bin Ali Al-Thani, FIBA Secretary General Mr. Andreas Zagklis, and FIBA Regional Office Asia – Executive Director Mr. Hagop Khajirian.

The meeting covered a wide range of topics, including updates on Asia’s National Team and Club competitions hosts for calendar year 2024 and 2025. Members were briefed on the activities and operations of the FIBA Regional Office – Asia from December 2023 to March 2024, which included the successful conclusion of the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers, the FIBA West Asia Super League season 2023/2024, and the BCL Asia Qualifiers held in Mongolia and Indonesia.

A significant focus was also placed on the preparations for Asia’s newly-rebranded club competition, Basketball Champions League Asia, scheduled to take place in June of the same year. 

The host for Asia’s top-tier club competition is set to be announced soon.

Additionally, the board received updates on the preparations for the launch of the inaugural edition of the FIBA Asia Women's Champions Cup, scheduled for later this year.

Approved during the first Asia Board meeting of the 2023-2027 cycle in Dubai, UAE, the decision to introduce this premier club competition for women marks a significant milestone and plays a pivotal role in strengthening the Regional Office’s commitment to "Women in Basketball" and advancing the development of women's basketball across the continent.

The inaugural FIBA Women's Asia Champions Cup will feature four clubs representing the league champions of China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Korea. Plans for 2025 include expanding the tournament to a six-team format, with the remaining two spots determined through qualifying tournaments.

The next Asia Board meeting is scheduled for July 2024.
