BANGKOK (Thailand) - There's no doubt that at every level and not only at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup, there is a a special kind of intensity and dynamic to the Japanese style of basketball.
BANGKOK (Thailand) - There's no doubt that at every level and not only at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup, there is a a special kind of intensity and dynamic to the Japanese style of basketball.
Renowned for their reliance on their skilled perimeter shooting, Japan's style is also immersed in their ability to fast-break and make the most of their quickness.
The big question is whether there is any nation in the women's game better in transition?
Not according to Nanako Todo, one of Japan's brightest young talents and a driving force behind their desire to make a deep run in Bangkok and push for honors.
She claimed: "I think Japan’s ability to run is number one in the world and so I think we can always compete against any team by utilizing our speed."
It's an interesting analysis and wanting to make the most of this aspect of their ethos, each aspiring female baller in Japan continues to use this as a key weapon to improve their standing globally.
Todo is also adamant that their effectiveness in transition is also complemented by other traditionally positive traits that fans have seen down the years.
She explained: "I want to try driving even more using my own speed and improving my shot selection with regard to how the defense is playing. I enjoy playing for Japan as all 5 players on the court always play together as a unit, playing offense and defense in harmony.
"We never relax, we stay focused and don’t forget to have confidence and fun - we play as one," she smiled.
While Japan can rely on their teamwork, dedication, defense and much heralded velocity, they are still yet to finish on the podium at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup.
Perhaps this year will see history being made - although maybe it won't be decided on whether they truly are the best in the world at running the floor, but how effective they are in improving those areas which have seen them fall short of a medal in the past.
