The 2017 U16 European champions trailed 49-45 at 7:00 mark of the fourth quarter before putting together a pivotal spell as defence turned into offence.
Multiple forced turnovers and blocked shots were the key factors in a 14-0 run as France seized control to establish a double-digit advantage inside the final minute.
It was a courageous performance from Japan, who were seeking revenge from their Round of 16 defeat in Zaragoza two years ago, but they ultimately came up short and will look to bounce back on Sunday against the hosts, Belarus.
As for France, a first step in the right direction with the ambition of emulating the side that reached the podium in the inaugural U17 Women’s World Cup on home soil in 2010.
Zoe Wadoux and Marine Fauthoux also hit double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively with their side next facing Colombia.
