ZARAGOZA (2016 FIBA U17 Women's World Championship) - There was history for Italy and Australia at the FIBA U17 Women's World Championship as they reached the Final of the competition for the first time on a historic day in Zaragoza.

It was the Sapphires who wrote the biggest headline as they inflicted a first-ever defeat at U17 level on the USA to record a memorable 73-60 victory. It was a tremendous team effort by Australia, who coped with star center Ezi Magbegor getting into foul trouble. They enjoyed some superb three-point shooting from Jazmin Shelley who finished with a game-high 23 points.

Italy had to shrug off a poor start against China before easing their way to a 62-51 success. Valeria Trucco had a 6-of-7 shooting performance for 14 points and Sara Madera was the game winner with 21 points to her name.

Elsewhere, the curtain fell for a number of teams as Japan beat Latvia to take 9th place. Mali made more history as they became the first African team to register three wins in the competition as they cruised to a triumph against Portugal and come in 11th. Finally, Brazil took 13th place after shooting down Mexico.
