SAMOA (Polynesian Cup 2018) - FIBA received news of Tonga's Women's official withdrawal hours before the deadline of submission during the technical meeting of the upcoming 2018 FIBA Women's Polynesia Cup.

The withdrawal of Tonga trimmed the pool of contestants to four with the remaining squads American Samoa, Tahiti, Cook Islands, and Host Samoa.

The top two teams will qualify for the 2019 Pacific Games.

FIBA Oceania Executive Director David Crocker released a statement regarding Tonga's withdrawal:

"We are deeply disappointed to receive the last minute withdrawal of Tonga's Women's team for the Women's Polynesia Cup 2018. Our office has gone above and beyond with the organizers of the team to assist the team to be in Apia for the first edition of the Polynesian Cup. FIBA will deliberate the next course of action over the next few weeks regarding this failure of Tonga to organize and compete in the competition.  To the rest of the teams, we wish you all good luck and have a great tournament"

Tonga has yet to release an official  statement regarding their withdrawal as of posting time.
