Apia (Samoa) – Fiji continued their unstoppable redemption run in the 2019 Pacific Games 3x3 basketball, sweeping their way from the group Play to the Qualifying Final Round to advance in the Semi-Finals.
Bannered by 5-on-5 Women’s Basketball All-Star Five member Letava Whippy, the Fiji women’s 3x3 team just dominated the group phase in Pool A with an unscathed 6-0 slate to progress to the Elite Eight.
Fiji was just too hot to handle even in the quarterfinals as it took down Pool B fourth placer Papua New Guinea (1-4), 21-8.
With this, the Fijians have a golden chance to redeem themselves after being dethroned by new champions American Samoa in the Pacific Games 5-on-5 women’s basketball.
In other pairings, Nicky Francois and Elia Massette once again put on a show to lift Pool B no.2 team New Caledonia (4-1) over the third-ranked squad from Pool A Solomon Islands (4-2), 20-13.
New Caledonia thus arranges a gigantic semi-final duel with undefeated Fiji for a chance to make it to the championship round of this historic Pacific Games 3x3 women’s basketball event.
The second-ranked team from Pool A Cook Islands (5-1) also advanced to the Final Four after a 10-7 win over Pool B third placer and host Samoa (3-2).
Cook Islands advances to the semis against Pool B leader Tahiti (5-0) which made quick work of the fourth-ranked team from Pool A Marshall Islands (3-3), 17-5.
Behind sisters Alizee and Ocean LeFranc, Tahiti also topped the group play in Pool B with an unscathed card to be the only undefeated team remaining in the women’s division aside from Fiji.
Over at the men’s division, refusing to be left behind by its women’s counterpart was the Fiji 3x3 men’s team.
