Strasbourg announced as FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 venue in France
MUNICH (Germany) - The stage for FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 is now set after the French city of Strasbourg was confirmed on Friday as an official venue for the flagship event.
MUNICH (Germany) - The stage for FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 is now set after the French city of Strasbourg was confirmed on Friday as an official venue for the flagship event to be co-hosted by France and Spain.
The 6,100-seat Rhenus Sport in Strasbourg will host two pools of the Group Phase and the corresponding Quarter-Finals. As announced previously, the Final Phase of the competition, as well as the two other Group Phase pools and Quarter-Finals, will be played in Valencia.
FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 is set to take place from June 17-27, 2021.
"We are delighted that the FIBA Women's EuroBasket will be organized in a city with such a rich basketball tradition," said FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak. "I would like to thank the local authorities of Strasbourg for their initiative and Mr. Jean-Pierre Siutat and the French Federation (FFBB) for facilitating this outcome. Even in these uncertain times, we are looking forward to next year's event with great optimism and excitement."
During the announcement, Jean-Pierre Siutat, the President of the FFBB, highlighted the role hosting major competitions plays in developing women's basketball in France.
"Hosting this flagship European event at the welcoming Rhenus Sport constitutes a powerful lever to continue to develop women's basketball, which is still the leading female team sport in France," said Mr. Siutat. "On behalf of French basketball, I would like to thank the city of Strasbourg, the SIG club, the local authorities of Bas-Rhin and the Grand Est region, as well our partners for their unfailing support, even in the current context."
The Mayor of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian, said: "We are delighted to welcome the eight participating nations to Strasbourg, the European capital, and wish everyone, players, spectators to experience great sporting moments during this event."
