DAMASCUS (Syria) - Al Wahda helped write FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL) history right in their very first outing in the pan-regional competition on Thursday night.
Over 8,000 fans, - majority of whom were clad in orange, trooped to the Al Fayhaa Stadium and provided the home team with the much-needed extra push to pull off the 74-70 come-from-behind win over Al Shorta in a face-off between Group B teams of the FIBA WASL West Asia League.
"They were probably one of the biggest factors for us towards the endgame," lauded Jomaru Brown, who starred in the victory with 34 points. "We hit shots; we brought the energy."
That now stands as the second largest crowd attendance in FIBA WASL to date, behind the 9000-plus set just last week at the Al Hamadaniyeh Stadium in Aleppo, Syria.
There, Al-Ittihad Ahli beat the visiting Al Naft 79-72 in a tight encounter between Group A teams to mark their FIBA WASL comeback in triumphant fashion.
It sure is a great time for Syrian basketball now, given that their two representatives have shown much promise after Al-Ittihad and Alkaramah were forced to withdraw from Season 1 following the devastating February earthquake.
Now, with a few more home games moving forward, there should be no denying that Al-Ittihad and Al Wahda fans will once again fill up their respective stadiums to show support.
There shouldn't be any surprise, too, if the attendance record gets shattered some time this season.
Records are meant to be broken, after all.
