AYSÉN (Chile) - The United States did not give space for surprises and defeated Mexico by a score of 98-33, to finish at the top of Group B in the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship.

The USA finished the Group Phase with a perfect 3-0 record, while Mexico finished group-play in the third position with a 1-2 record.

Mexico came out bravely and in the first four minutes managed to level the score 7-7, but the United States immediately adjusted its defense, stole balls, ran the court and began to score from the perimeter, to open the difference to 28-11 at end of that first quarter. Although it was early in the game, the advantage at that point already seemed too strong.

In the following quarters, the dynamics of the game did not change, and the USA continued widening the gap to ensure another impressive triumph.

Payton Verhulst with 19 points and Londynn Jones with 13 points, commanded the annotations for the USA. For Mexico, Mariana Valenzuela contributed 12 points.

With this result, the Quarter-Finals are set for Thursday:

The winners will advance to the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2019 Semi-Finals and will earn a ticket to the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2020.
