Apia (Samoa) – Fiji sweeps it's way to the Semi-Final Round of the 2019 Pacific Games 3x3 Basketball Tournament.
Men’s 5-on-5 basketball All-Star Five member Marques Whippy led the way for the unbeaten Pool A leader Fiji (5-0) which drubbed the fourth-listed squad from Pool B in Tahiti (3-2), 21-13.
Fiji barged into the Final Four against the host team and surprise Pool B leader Marshall Islands (4-1) trounced Pool A fourth-ranked squad Vanuatu in the Quarterfinals, 21-7.
On the other side, 5-on-5 men’s basketball champion and Pool A second-ranked squad Guam (4-1) dispatched Pool B third placer New Caledonia (3-1), 21-11.
That win catapulted Guam to a chance to make it to the finals when it battles familiar Micronesian rival Marshall Islands.
Samoa (4-1), the second-ranked team in Pool B scored a 19-8 win over Pool A third seed Vanuatu (2-3) to earn the right to challenge Fiji in the semis.
Meanwhile, gunner Stephanie Saminidan of New Caledonia was adjudged as the first-ever shootout king of this breakthrough Pacific Games 3x3 basketball.
The four squads from each division battle in an epic semi-final showdown followed by a championship finale between the lucky teams from both men’s and women’s division for a chance to be hailed as the Pacific Games 3x3 champions.
