BELGRADE (Serbia) - The recently crowned FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 TISSOT MVP Sonja Vasic has been handed the honor of carrying Serbia's flag at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The decision to hand the role to the hugely popular Vasic represents significant recognition not only for the player herself, but also for women's basketball, with the nation having celebrated landing the title in Valencia, Spain.

Vasic and the Serbian team enjoyed a joyful reception when they returned to Belgrade and it included meeting President Aleksandar Vucic who spoke of his delight at the team's efforts.

Vasic led Serbia with a number of incredible displays to take the MVP accolade, although she has been posting these types of contributions down the years, also highly influential in her country being crowned champions for the first time in 2015, as well as collecting  a maiden Olympic medal in Rio five years ago when they won bronze.

The added significance of Vasic carrying the flag is that she will hang up her basketball shoes when the curtain falls in Tokyo, calling time on her stellar career.  There is also the prospect of 2021 turning into a truly fairytale ending, with Serbia searching for another potential podium spot when the action gets underway this month.
