BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The FIBA Regional Office-Asia successfully organized two separate Level 2 Sports Performance Specialist (SPS) workshops in Southeast Asia last June.

The three-day courses were held in Thailand and Malaysia as efforts to hone strength and conditioning coaches across the basketball community, especially in the region, continue.

A total of 25 participants attended the sessions held in Chiang Mai last June 21-23, made possible in cooperation with the Basketball Sport Association of Thailand.

Attendees such as Niti Kariya were grateful for the whole experience, and is hoping for an opportunity to take part in the Level 3 SPS course some time in the future.

"It was very enriching. The content is very good and useful for application. Hopefully, I will have a chance to join in the SPS Level 3 workshop. I cannot wait for it," Kariya said.

Another participant in Uraiwan Pinklao  was as thankful and said, ”From this SPS Level 2 training, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about exercise, strengthening and conditioning for basketball athletes, rehabilitation, and appropriate training program for basketball athletes.”

Six attendees, on the other hand,  took part in the workshop held in Kuala Lumpur last June 25-27, made possible in collaboration with the Malaysia Basketball Association.

Dr. Faiz Baharudin was thankful for the sessions as it helped enrich his knowledge on how crucial the role of strength and conditioning is in basketball.

"It served as an eye-opener for us as basketball coaches, especially on the integration of strength and conditioning to our basketball trainings and how it can really assist in the basketball performance, and serve as part of injury prevention in the long run, too," he said.

Tan Wei Jie was glad as well with all the information he garnered from the whole course. "I have gained extensive knowledge about physical workouts that are crucial for athletes, including methods to improve strength, endurance, and explosiveness," he said.

"The insights on maintaining muscle levels and preventing injuries during games are particularly beneficial for the development of our players," Tan furthered.

Taught through theoretical and practical sessions, the SPS program is part of FIBA’s initiative to strengthen the local coaches' physical training skills and promote strength and conditioning in basketball, which greatly contributes in the quality of games.
