TEL AVIV (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers) - Lior Eliyahu has decided to call it a day with Israel's national team. Eliyahu featured in six FIBA EuroBaskets, the last in 2017.
One of the country's top players for the past decade, Eliyahu featured in six FIBA EuroBaskets, the last in 2017 when Israel served as one of the Group Phase hosts. That marked the last time he played for the country.
"It has always been a great privilege to wear the uniform of the Israeli team," Eliyahu said. "I played in several teams in my career, but wearing the national uniform was always special for me.
There was no doubt that Israel had a special player about to break into their senior side when the 2.03m (6ft 8in) Eliyahu played at the 2004 U20 European Championship in the Czech Republic and then the 2005 FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina.
He helped the Israelis reach the U20 Final after averaging 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, and then in South America the following year averaged 18.2 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game as the team finished 10th.
In 2006, he played for Israel's senior team in a friendly against Lithuania and one year later took part in his first EuroBasket. After erupting for 29 points and collecting 9 rebounds in a win over Portugal, Eliyahu dazzled against hosts Spain with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
He was outstanding at FIBA EuroBasket 2015, averaging almost 14 points per game as Israel finished second to hosts France in the Group Phase but the team fell flat in their first knockout game against Italy and crashed out of the tournament.
Eliyahu will have a lot of positive memories to look back on.
"I would like to thank everyone who coached or managed the team in my long years in its ranks and especially the players," he said. "I will always be a fan of the Israeli national team and wish it success in the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers."
Israel, 2-2 and in second place in Group H in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers, are attempting to reach the Second Round. They will host Greece on June 28 and then play at Great Britain on July 2.
