ATHENS (Greece) - The second edition of the FIBA 3x3 U17 Europe Cup will take place in Athens, Greece, FIBA and the Hellenic Basketball Federation announced on December 27, 2021.
"It is a very good development for the growth of 3x3 that an important 3x3 event is back in Athens after 10 years," FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said.
The FIBA 3x3 U17 Europe Cup 2022 will be played on September 2-4, nearly ten years to the day after Athens hosted the first-ever FIBA 3x3 World Cup, which was also the first 3x3 senior national team competition organized by FIBA.
"I am delighted to see Greece invest in 3x3 again, especially in a competition that brings together a generation of future stars and Olympians."
After 3x3’s success story at Tokyo 2020, the Hellenic Basketball Federation and its President Vaggelis Liolios decided to bring back the new Olympic discipline to the birthplace of the Olympic Games:
"The rapid spread of 3x3 worldwide inspired the Hellenic Basketball Federation to immediately promote and strengthen the sport within the national context," Liolios said.
"In this framework, we clearly integrated the 3x3 development in our agenda as a top priority for the coming years. The successful organization of such major international events in the past is a guarantee for one more wonderful FIBA event in our country.
"Organizing the FIBA 3x3 U17 Europe Cup is a major challenge, responsibility, but also a pleasure, and an honour for the Hellenic Basketball Federation. We are looking forward to this unique event which is the beginning of many similar future collaborations with FIBA."
The FIBA 3x3 U17 Europe Cup is a yearly competition, and the second edition will be organized in Athens at a location to be confirmed. Spain’s women and Slovenia’s men are the defending champions.
