MADRID - Former national team star and long-time player Jorge Garbajosa on Saturday was elected as the new president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB).

At the Extraordinary General Assembly of the FEB, the 38-year-old was voted into office as the successor to Jose Luis Saez.

Garbajosa played many years for Spain and was famously a leader in the side that won the 2006 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Japan. A three-time Olympian, Garbajosa was also a member of the Spain side that won EuroBasket 2009 in Poland.

"I want to give thanks to everyone, to those that supported me and to those that did not," Garbajosa said. "I have been working 25 years for this. You don't know the honor, the responsibility and the enthusiasm that I have in being here today. I promise to work, I promise to unite, for us to come together in order for our basketball to be the best. Not from tomorrow, but from this afternoon."
