MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA has been awarded the number one spot on the #SportOnSocial League Table for 2020 with REDTORCH, published today.
The annual #SportOnSocial League Table ranks IOC-recognized International Federations (IFs) according to their social media performance. Data is collected from January 1 to December 31, 2019; last year’s winner was FIFA.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 was a huge success online with 1.5 billion video views on social media and the FIBA3x3 Facebook page multiplying its video views by five in 2019, enabling FIBA to remain first on Facebook and second on Instagram. FIBA also climbed to second on Twitter. More specifically, FIBA generated 5.6 times more Facebook video views than the average International Federation, attracting a remarkable 31 percent of all video views.
World Rugby ranked second in the overall League Table with World Athletics coming in third for 2020.
Prior to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, a new social media milestone was achieved with the FIBA World Cup Facebook page reaching 3 million fans through the Qualifiers for the event. This number reached 24 million once the World Cup tipped off. Also, the Weibo FIBA and FIBA World Cup accounts combined experiencing over 200 percent growth to over 10 million fans.
Nicolas Chapart, FIBA Head of Digital said: "Last year was such a crucial year for FIBA with our flagship event, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, taking place across eight cities in China. The entire FIBA social media team in the headquarters and across our five regional offices was focused on delivering the best possible coverage to our fans on all platforms. We are obviously delighted that our social media strategy to put the "Fans at Heart" paid off. With such strong performances from the fellow International Federations, we know that the "race" in 2020 will be again very interesting! We thank basketball fans around the world for their trust and will continue to work hard and innovate so as to service them in the best possible way."
FIBA was second in 2019, one place higher than in 2018 due to the significant improvements on YouTube and ranked #1 on Facebook for that year.
