ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - The 2021 FIBA Regional Office Africa Central Board convened by video conference last week (June 11), where current and upcoming topics dominated the one-day event.
The session was chaired by FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave with FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, Executive Director Africa Alphonse Bile, Basketball Africa League Chairman Amadou Gallo Fall also in attendance in addition to delegates from 54 National Federations.
Delegates heard reports on FIBA Africa's 2020 activities. Details were provided on how the pandemic affected the whole world, and the impact it caused to the game of basketball on the continent.
In his speech, FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave noted that: "the year 2020 was a difficult one for everyone because of the coronavirus pandemic and particularly for basketball, with the death of some members of the community and temporary suspension of basketball activities."
Manave congratulated FIBA Africa "for its responsiveness which, in this new context, has been able to reinvent itself by organizing a few activities. After eight months of hiatus, FIBA was able to organize the first window of the 2021 AfroBasket Qualifiers in November of last year as well as the Final Round of the FIBA U18 African Championship."
The following two topics dominated the FIBA Regional Office Africa Central Board:
- The Central Board voted to call a meeting to study the problems of the sub-zones to help them adopt a more efficient way of working.
- The Central Board office, within the framework of Basketball Africa League, committed to resolve the problem of countries that had different champions of the domestic leagues during the pandemic, through a consultation before the start of the next BAL Qualifiers.
