SUVA (Fiji) –Basketball Fiji are continuing their mission to use sport as a tool to address some of the world’s more pressing issues from gender equality to good health and well-being, and quality education, through Basketball for Good programs.
National women’s player, 19-year-old Delores King is a Basketball for Good coach and has seen the growth, development, and representation of women in basketball.
“Basketball for Good programs provide a lot of things to a lot of people on, and off the court, but the most noticeable change has been the number of women and girls picking up a basketball, whistle or scoresheet to get involved,” Delores said. “Since becoming a coach I have personally started living healthier, gained more confidence speaking in public, and I believe become a better coach and person.”
Gender Equality is a key focus through Basketball for Good programs in Fiji with coaches, coordinators and mentors actively works towards equal participation in their projects, empowering young women through "access to education, skills and opportunities," Delores highlighted. " I have seen how many more women involved in basketball which I believe showcases the success of Basketball for Good in creating a more inclusive environment.”
Delores embodies the program's focus on Good Health and Well-being. Basketball for Good isn't just about perfecting jump shots; it's about promoting healthy lifestyles and empowering coaches like Delores to spread that message within their communities.
"Basketball has helped me to learn better and socially, it has helped me create friendships with coaches and participants which is something I struggled with before becoming a coach.”
Basketball changes lives forever, I love it.
