YEREVAN (FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Pre-Qualifiers) - Denmark survived overtime drama in Armenia, taking an all-important win away from home, 78-71.
Turning point: Ryan Boatright's heroics forced overtime for Armenia, but Denmark held their composure in the added five minutes. Darko Jukic put them up by three in the last 30 seconds of overtime, Armenia had a chance to tie it, but Jonathan Gilling blocked Andrew Chrabascz's shot, allowing Adama Darbo to seal the deal for a big win away from home.
Game hero: Gabriel Lundberg went all-round for Denmark to help them erase a 13-point deficit in regulation. Lundberg finished with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals - which could be considered as an early birthday gift to himself. He'll turn 23 in early December.
Stats don't lie: In such a close contest, it is important to keep control of possession and convert free throws. Armenia's leading man Ryan Boatright failed to do so, with 8 turnovers and just 3-of-7 from the line. Denmark grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and won the rebounding battle 52-43.
They said: "It was difficult game for us. I know that some of Armenian leading players were missing tonight and I think the next game in Denmark will be tougher" - Danish head coach Erez Bittman.
Game notes: Denmark have taken part at three FIBA EuroBasket tournaments, but they were way back in 1951, 1953 and 1955. They have taken a huge step towards the Second Round now with an away win against their biggest rivals in Group B.
