How teams clinch spots, or stay in hunt, for Second Round of Americas Qualifiers

MIES (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers) - More battles will be waged this week as national sides attempt to book their places in the Second Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers. 

With eight teams already qualified for the Second Round of the Americas Qualifiers, there are only four spots remaining as we head into the home stretch of the First Round.

While it’s important to remember that the top three teams in each of the four groups will progress to the Second Round, it bears repeating that teams need to win as many games as they can since all results carry over.

The third window is even more exciting with every team  still having a chance to progress!

Uruguay have already secured their spot in the Second Round.

Argentina have sealed a place in the Second Round of Qualifiers.

Panama have the inside track to the Second Round, needing a win at Argentina or Paraguay to advance. In fact, they can only finish fourth if they lose both games, including by at least 21 points to Paraguay.

Paraguay need two wins to have a chance of advancing .

Brazil have punched their ticket to the Second Round.

Venezuela have booked their place in the Second Round.

Chile will advance to the Second Round if they beat Colombia on Thursday.

Colombia need to beat Chile in order to stay alive and have a chanve to advance.

USA have secured their spot in the Second Round.


Puerto Rico would seal a spot in the Second Round on Thursday with a victory over Cuba.

Mexico have secured their spot in the Second Round.

Cuba, to have a chance of progressing in the Second Round, must win against both Puerto Rico and the USA and hope that Mexico defeats Puerto Rico.

The Dominican Republic have booked their place in the Second Round.

Canada have assured themselves of a spot in the Second Round.

Virgin Islands will advance to the Second Round if they win on Thursday against the Bahamas.

Bahamas need to win against Virgin Islands on Thursday to have a chance of progressing.
