Puerto Rico and Mexico remain undefeated after Day 2
AGUADA (FIBA U18 Women’s Americas Championship) – Puerto Rico and Mexico captured their second win of the Centrobasket U17 Women’s Championship, as Guatemala and Bahamas summed their first victory.
AGUADA (FIBA U18 Women’s Americas Championship) – Puerto Rico and Mexico captured their second win of the Centrobasket U17 Women’s Championship, as Guatemala and Bahamas summed their first victory on the regional championship.
Guatemala leveled its record at 1, after a 98-35 win over the British Virgin Islands. Racking up 26 assists and taking full advantage of the opponents 52 turnovers, the team from Guatemala took over the game and never looked back. Every player from Guatemala added points to the scoreboard, as Gabriela Vallecillo led the scoring with 17 points.
Bahamas captured its first win of the Centrobasket U17 Women’s Championship after an 86-69 win over Surinam. Bahamas escaped to an early lead after a 22-9 first quarter. Surinam discounted a few points from the difference, but the team from the Bahamas kept a safe distance on the scoreboard and celebrated the win. Alana Marie Pinder led the scoring for the Bahamas with 17 points.
Mexico extended its record to 2-0 after a 75-46 win over El Salvador. The Mexicans had a slow start, and the Salvadorians escaped with an 11-2 run. The Mexicans bettered their output, and with a 24-8 second quarter took over the game. Nothing changed, Mexico kept adding by winning the remainder of the quarters. Once again, Sofia Payan led the scoring for Mexico with 22 points.
Puerto Rico maintained its high-octane offense and captured its second win of the championship after a 88-22 win over Costa Rica. With total control of the boards and a well-rounded offensive were every player got points on the scoreboard, the Puerto Ricans took a commanding lead from start to finish. Nairimar Vargas was the best for the Boricuas with 8 points and 7 rebounds.
On the last day of Group Phase, British Virgin Islands will take on Mexico, Guatemala will face El Salvador, Costa Rica will face Surinam and Puerto Rico will face the Bahamas.
The top-three teams from the Centrobasket U17 Women’s Championship will qualify to the FIBA U18 Women’s Americas Championship 2018.
