JAKARTA (Indonesia) - The official logo of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 was unveiled on Tuesday during a joint press conference at the stadion GBK Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The new logo combines together the elements of several unique Indonesian identities along with the patterns of a basketball ball and court. This symbolizes the location where the much anticipated event will take place.

"I am very excited to welcome the logo launch of FIBA Asia Cup 2021. A logo that carries a strong Indonesian identity into it. "It’s an absolute honor for Jakarta and Indonesia for becoming the host of FIBA Asia Cup 2021. It is a very important milestone to all of us that we finally revealed the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 logo. It will mark the return of Asian basketball back to Indonesia. FIBA Asia Cup is a stage for Indonesia to show the highly promising potential of Indonesian basketball," - added Indonesia Basketball Association (PERBASI) President Mr, Dany Kosasih.

In the logo, the FIBA Asia Cup trophy is surrounded with a design which mixes Batik patterns and references to the Javan hawk-eagle. Batik is an important and strong part of the Indonesian culture and can be seen patterned everywhere throughout the country. The Javan hawk-eagle is the national bird of Indonesia and is an Indonesian endemic, meaning they can only be found in the country, specifically in the humid forests of Java. The majestic bird of prey is also referred to as Garuda, a mythical birdlike creature which is also a strong part of the Indonesian culture.

"The logo reveal is an important milestone on the road to FIBA Asia Cup 2021. This visual icon blends the unique attributes of the FIBA Asia Cup and of Indonesia as host nation,"  said FIBA Executive Director Asia Mr. Hagop Khajirian.

Reflecting his views on post pandemic epoch, Khajirian said: "Please let us all remind ourselves that every adversity that comes in front of us is an opportunity to raise ourselves to do better than our best."

References to Indonesia’s rich traditions are also reflected in the typography of the competition. The referred pattern is the Minangkabau Songket, found in different types of fabric in Indonesia.

FIBA Asia Cup 2021 will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from August 17-29, 2021.

Indonesia will be hosting this prestigious event for a second time after serving as the venue of the competition back in 1993.
