BEIRUT (FIBA Asia Cup 2017) - At the dawn of the last day of the group phase at the FIBA Asia Cup, let's look at which teams have made the Quarter-Finals and who else can join them.
After a couple of intense games on Saturday, we finally know the team standings for Groups C and D, with the top three teams of each group advancing.
The top teams of each group - New Zealand for Group C and Australia for Group D - both earned outright berths in the Quarter-Finals and will wait for the winners of two Qualification to the Quarter-Finals games that feature the second and third place teams from Groups A and B, which will be determined at the end of Sunday.
The second and third place teams of Groups C and D, meanwhile, will be featured in their own Qualification to the Quarter-Finals games that will determine who faces the top teams of Groups A and B. Iran and Jordan will dispute the top spot in Group A today, while the Philippines have practically locked the top spot in Group B.
Determining the top team in Group C was particularly interesting, given how New Zealand, Lebanon and Korea all ended up with identical 2-win, 1-loss records. Lebanon beat Korea on Tuesday, 72-66, the Tall Blacks beat the Cedars on Thursday, 86-82, and Korea upset the Kiwis on Saturday, 76-75. New Zealand, however, took the top spot by virtue of having the superior quotient among the three teams. Had Korea won by 9 points or more, they would have bagged first place instead.
Today's crucial games are the following:
Iraq v China to determine the second place team in Group B.
Iran v Jordan to determine the first place team in Group A.
Syria v India to determine the third place team in Group A.
The Qualification to the Quarter-Finals games begin on Monday 14 August, with Japan facing Korea and Lebanon taking on Chinese Taipei.
