BENGALURU (FIBA U18 Women's Asian Championship 2018) – Indonesia beat Malaysia 86-35 in a crucial 7-8 classification game that ensured it retained its position in elite Division A.
"Reaching the Division A two years ago was a great memory to remember, but this year was totally different, we wanted to write a new chapter in our history," Indonesia Head Coach Arif Gunarto told FIBA.com.
While Indonesia has achieved its primary goal, the wide gulf between them and the top Division A teams still remains.
The south east Asian side lost each of its three group games against Australia, Korea and Chinese Taipei, by a minimum margin of 44 points.
"We were excited to face the giants. It was a great chance and experience for us. I wanted my players to enjoy all the games, stay realistic, but also be optimistic. We didn't have much preparation, but we had armored our girls to face Division A," Coach Gunarto said. "Retaining our spot in Division A was our clear mission. "
The all important semis and finals are still to be played, but as far as Indonesia is concerned, it's already mission accomplished.
