    Day 2: Philippines now 2-0 after record win; Singapore, Hong Kong hack out wins

    AMMAN (Jordan) - The Philippines are now 2-0, as Singapore and Hong Kong hacked out wins in Division B of the FIBA U16 Women's Asian Championship 2023, Tuesday at the Prince Hamzah Sport Hall.

    AMMAN (Jordan) - The Philippines completely had their way, while Singapore and Hong Kong showed grace under pressure to collect wins in Day 2 of Division B play in the FIBA U16 Women's Asian Championship 2023, Tuesday at the Prince Hamza Sport Hall.

    Philippines stamp class on Maldives

    The Philippines outclassed Maldives, 144-22, for their second win in as many games to move one step closer of reaching the knockout crossover Semi-Finals.

    Gilas Women overwhelmed the opposition with a 19-0 start to the game, and would face little to no challenge from that point on as they eventually took the provisional lead in Group A (2-0).

    Ten of the 12 players finished in double-figure scoring in the victory, with Sophia Canindo leading the way with a game-high 21 points. Nevaeh Smith and Aubrey Lapasaran made 16 apiece.

    Ryan Nair had 15 points. Ava Fajardo supplied 13 points and 9 rebounds. Isabella De Jesus and Shannon Sayson also made 13 apiece while Alyssia Palma added 10 markers for the Philippines, who recorded the most points so far by any team in both divisions in this year's meet.

    Gilas had 47 steals in the win as they forced Maldives to 73 turnovers, scoring 103 from those.

    The Philippines can clinch the top spot of Group A against Jordan on Wednesday.

    Singapore stave off Guam

    Singapore warded off Guam, 71-60, to start off their campaign on a winning note.

    Chrystal Toe and Jing Ling Lee connected on crucial back-to-back three-pointers inside the final 1:16 of the game to shut the door close on the opposition, who chopped down a deficit as big as 18 to only seven points, 65-58, approaching the last two minutes.

    Leshane Yeoh bannered the win with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Toe finished with 15 points while Madelin Lock made 12 markers, 7 boards, and 6 assists for the Singaporeans, who have joined Iran on top of the Group B standings as both teams tote 1-0 records.

    The Iranians, coincidentally, will be their next foes on Wednesday.

    Jia Rose Peters, meanwhile, had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Guam in a losing effort.

    Kam tows Singapore past Jordan in thriller

    Tsz Ching Kam came through in the clutch to lift Singapore past Jordan for their first win of the tourney, 67-64, in a nail-biting conclusion to the second day of competitions.

    Kam finished with 22 points, none bigger than her triple to break the 64-all tie with 28.8 seconds left as they went on to hack out the victory after losing a seven-point lead early in the fourth. She sank six of the team's eight three-pointers in the triumph that fanned their Semi-Finals hopes.

    Yan Ting Tai had 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Ka Wun Cheung added 13 as they also played a role in the third-quarter reversal that saw Hong Kong erase a 39-47 deficit.

    Zena Alkarain, meanwhile, had 27 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals to lead Jordan in the heartbreaking loss, which foiled their bid of tying the Philippines at 2-0 in Group B.

    Hoor Alkarain and Rosine Shamieh added 12 points apiece in the loss.
