    Dinis kept at helm of Angola men's team for FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Qualifiers

    LUANDA (FIBA AfroBasket 2017) - Carlos Dinis is to remain at the helm of Angola men's national team, the country's Basketball Federation (FAB) confirmed on Thursday.

    LUANDA (FIBA AfroBasket 2017) - Carlos Dinis is to remain at the helm of Angola men's national team, the country's basketball federation (FAB) confirmed on Thursday.

    Dinis, who currently coaches local side ASA in the Angolan BIC Basket League, led his country at last summer's FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, where the former African champions lost their two Group Phase games.

    He will be assisted by Manuel Silva "Gi", who is in charge of Angola U19 men's national team. 

    Dinis is expected to announce Angola's preliminary squad on March 18. 

    Talking to the local media, Dinis said he will "will select the most qualified players". Foreign-based players will not be selected for the qualifier, he pointed out. 

    According to FAB, Dinis' agreement will last for the duration of the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Zone 6 Group G Qualifier, which will take place in Lusaka, Zambia from March 25-30.

    In order to qualify for the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Final Round in Congo-Brazzaville (August 19-30), Angola will need to overcome regional rivals South Africa and Zambia

    The team that finishes second in Group G will get a second chance to adance to Brazzaville by taking on the second-placed team of Group H, which consists of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana and Seychelles.
